Somewhere we lost a day (?)

August 18, 2013 at 2:46 pm

I don’t know when we lost a day in our blog entries, but there was definitely an extra one where we crossed this incredible boardwalk. The only possibilities for how this happened are that we either lost track of days or an extra one materialized.  So on the 32nd of the month, we crossed this beautiful boardwalk and ate a lot of food at a deli. We also crossed a great suspension bridge.  And then these cows gave us some attitude: It was the nicest lost day we’ve had yet.  We ran into Spider and met K2, a new Mayfly, […]

8/1 Pochuck Mountain Shelter (14)

August 13, 2013 at 11:45 am

New Jersey has been very informative so far. Not only has the trail been well blazed, but whenever we take a wrong turn we’re met with these: Thanks, ATC! First thing this morning, though, we ran in to a pipeline being installed and met a different type of sign. After a surprised construction worker had to walk all of us across the danger zone, we walked to High Point State Park, home to the highest point in New Jersey. Jersey is not really known for its mountains. We went down to the beach for the novelty of a concession stand […]

7/30 Signs, signs, everywhere signs (12.4)

August 4, 2013 at 9:58 am

We took today fairly slowly again, and met some locals.  Most of the businesses so far in Jersey have had very definite opinions about hikers.  We had heard that the owner of Joe to Go had a reputation for disliking hikers, but we didn’t realize to what extent all of Culvers Gap shared his opinion until we hiked down into it to find some breakfast/lunch.  We suddenly felt like we had walked into the wrong side of the 1950s.  We tried to abide by all the rules, but still got ignored for a long time at the first place we […]

7/29 Brink Road Shelter (14.1)

It was a beautiful day to be in Jersey.  We took a good part of the day to get back to the trail, but we made our way back to the Mohican Outdoor Center eventually. The day was full of ridge climbs and views, including this fire tower: Then we descended into some marshy lowlands where we uncovered a subversive mammalian resistance against the AT. Beaver Sabotage. The water sources haven’t been great, but we had fun with this creative alternative provided: Overall, though, the trail has been a veritable highway since we left PA. Jersey has had a lot […]

7/28 Rain Day!

July 31, 2013 at 6:35 pm

The rain had a lot of personality today. It was on and off, heavy and light, and at one point it trapped me in a privy for ten minutes. We decided after an hour of deliberating that we were going to wait it out rather than spend the next few days drying out. Limey, of course, had packed up and left early. We pictured him stoically slogging through the torrential downpour, his British flag hanging limply from his wet bag. Then we walked to the center lodge at the campground with our belongings and found him huddled under the front […]

7/27 Mohican Outdoor Center (11)

July 28, 2013 at 3:26 pm

Oh how lazy we are now! We’ve been spoiled by Pennsylvania towns and we spent the first half of the day walking around Delaware Water Gap and eating. We got showers at the Church Hostel, breakfast at the diner, and ice cream at an old fashioned ice cream parlor. That is a real Soda Jerk. Then we toughed up a little and hiked out through construction, which was strange. The way across the bridge was a little harrowing with traffic zipping by, but mentally gratifying to finally be crossing the border. The river separating PA and NJ, at last! Then […]
