8/7 Schagticoke Campsite (22.6)

Slackpacking today! Plantman was kind enough to spend his day once again shuttling around hikers and slacking us 18 miles North. We tried our best to bust it out quickly, but we were unable to lose Limey with his ultra-efficient British strides. We actually felt like it was a bad decision on his part, since our digestive systems were having a pretty hard time processing all the vegetables and beans PlantMan fed us after our steady cheeseburger and pasta diet.  We’re back in the land of stonewalls in the woods! He stayed behind us right up to the road where […]

8/6 Route 55 and the PlantMan encounter (13.6)

We woke up to find a huge snake coiled up outside of our tent today.  Fortunately, it turned out to be one of the less venomous rubber snakes that roam these parts.  Thanks, K2.  We benefited from some more trail magic from our benefactor, Jeff (or Limpin’ Eagle).  We showed up to RPH shelter just in time to get some early morning hamburgers and soda, important staples of the hiker diet.  After cooking for us and Yule the Mule, Jeff saw us off and we continued on our way. We’re getting into the part of NY that is more of […]

8/5 Shenandoah Campsite (18.5)

We said our goodbyes to DocSpice and Roadkill today as they headed into the city.  We’ll hopefully be seeing them in a few days when they’re back on the trail.  In the meantime, we headed out with determination today but only made it about 2 miles before we ran into Atlas sitting by the side of the trail.  We said hello and were about to continue past when he turned towards us and we saw that he was covered with blood.  Once we realized he had fallen and was pretty dazed, we patched him up with my obese medical kit […]

8/4 Graymoor Spiritual Center (7)

We woke up, clean, to good food and coffee from the place across the street and almost didn’t want to face the woods again.  We were strangely ready to hike the 20 miles, and excited about seeing the trail today, but we have been out for almost 4 months now and we’re beginning to really miss hygiene and coffee.  But, the little things restored our spirits and we got going early.  This morning our motel host was much cheerier and gladly drove us to the trail head, engaging in lively conversation the whole way.  It’s amazing what a difference a […]

8/3 Bear Mountain (21)

What a day!  It was raining this morning and we laid in our smelly sleeping bags miserably until we heard Kitchen Sink saying in his Jersey-ese, “You smell that?  Smells like eggs and bacon!”  We laughed and packed up quickly after that, then headed down to the road to meet Hedley.  He had the best breakfast sandwiches ready for us and the whole thing felt a little surreal to wake up to hot food like that.  We were well fortified to hike in the rain and we headed out with Kitchen Sink on a mission.  The terrain was pretty rough […]

8/2 Stealth Camping before Orange Turnpike (20)

August 18, 2013 at 2:56 pm

We woke up today with the sun and got an early start.  We were pretty excited to have a goal and to attempt our twenties across NY.  Unfortunately, we had no idea what we were in for.  The terrain was terrible.  There were trees blown down across the trail everywhere, making the already rough and rocky terrain into a total obstacle course. The trail was mostly slick rock that had just been wet by last night’s rain, and the ups and downs were all dangerous scrambles or drops off of cliffs.  In many places, we had to drop our packs […]
