8/18 Zero in Williamstown

September 23, 2013 at 10:49 pm

We started our day by failing to find a working laundromat.  By the time we located the town laundromat, we also discovered that it was an abandoned building.  So we ended up taking a zero at Williamstown Motel.  Actually, Mark wasn’t feeling a hundred percent and we ran into old friends from the trail.  With Six and Snakebite for company, it was easy to justify a day off. Hikers gathering around a firepit outside when they have paid for a safe, dry, warm room indoors.  Our morale and diet improved for a day, we are ready to carry on!

8/17 Williamstown (14.7)

Today we summited Greylock, Massachusettes’ biggest mountain on the AT! It helped re-acclimate us to elevation gain, and made us a spectacle on the summit, which was covered with clean, decent people trying to have a picnic on a vehicle accessible mountain.  We spent a while on the summit with Hagrid and Killer and somehow failed to take any pictures. Eventually we forced ourselves to descend into town where we were whisked away to civilization by Mark’s parents!  We have hit the last wave of Santoskis, which is a benchmark in itself!  Thank you so much!

8/16 Cheshire Church (18.3)

We woke up today to hear a lawnmower, followed by the Voice’s distinct timbre saying ‘I am German.  I work while the world sleeps.’ Rolling out of our tent, we found him covered in wet grass cuttings at the Cookie Lady’s house, having just mowed their lawn for them.  It was quite a way to come back to consciousness.  The couple had left us some hardboiled eggs and we had a good breakfast before we started out on the trail for Dalton.  It was a good hike over more of Mass’ beautiful rolling terrain to get there.  When we did […]

8/15 Cookie Lady / Becket (11.1)

At sunrise we woke up and sat on the dock at Upper Goose Pond to watch the sunrise. It was incredible.  …Then we got pancakes! Hagrid found a women’s shirt and looked very good for all of this. And we tried to bead the Voice’s beard. Goose Pond Cabin, you will be missed… Today was a very important day for us.  Today, we crossed I-90, the highway that we have driven many times.  On multiple occasions, we looked up from I-90 to see the ‘Appalachian Trail’ bridge crossing spanning those four lanes and hoped we would get a chance to […]

8/14 Upper Goose Pond Cabin (21.1)

September 18, 2013 at 7:38 pm

Today we set out from the shelter on a mission to reach the fabled Upper Goose Pond Cabin, where they serve thru hikers pancakes!  We are highly motivated by food now, so we set out at a good pace.  The Voice, perhaps because of some slightly undercooked three bean soup from the night before, was having gastrointestinal regrets and fell behind.  We pushed on, expecting to see him when we broke for lunch, but we were German-less after a long break and we realized we had lost our hiking companion.  We decided he would probably make it regardless and kept […]

8/13 Tom Leonard Shelter (6.4)

September 8, 2013 at 5:26 pm

We got a bit of a late start today.  Actually, we spent most of the day in Great Barrington and basically nearoed in to the Tom Leonard Shelter, which was a short 6 miles up and out of town.  Most of the day was spent lazing around town, which proved to be more stressful than we expected.  We seem to have forgotten how to tune out the daily noises of civilized life; the traffic with all of its beeping and buzzing was cracking our veneer.  But, we survived the rigors of walking around flat paved areas and headed back into […]

8/12 Great Barrington (15.4)

September 8, 2013 at 5:10 pm

lazy day, sunrise on bear mountain with the clouds, sages ravine, jess’ house Today had one of the best sunrises of the trip.  Even though we weren’t at a particularly high elevation, we were higher than most of the terrain around us, and so we had the effect of the lower hills rising out of the morning clouds like islands in the sea. We were lazy about hiking today, coming in to the road crossing to Great Barrington later in the day.  Massachusettes at last!! Jess picked us up and whisked us away (for the second time this week) to […]
