The view from Pleasant Pond Mountain

It took us a little while this morning to get a ride back to the trail but we were OK with waiting and eating a hot breakfast.  After the hot tub and good food we were feeling a little spoiled.  Maine has made us feel that way in general, between the friendliness of the locals and the sunny weather that’s coming on.  It looks like we were a little preemptive when we bought zero degree sleeping bags; the weather is turning back to a toasty Indian summer temperature for the next couple of weeks.  Oh well, at least we’ll definitely be warm enough at night now!

We didn’t have to do any fording today, despite our maps warning us that we would.  Although Mark was a little perturbed about the part of our map that was labeled ‘Moxie Pond ford,’ since he was under the impression that ponds aren’t particularly fordable.  Fortunately for us, it was a rock hop on the side of the pond.  The day was full of beautiful views as we hiked together over Pleasant Pond Mountain and down to Bald Mountain Brook Lean-to, where we found everyone we knew.

The red carpet

Tent space was at a premium at the shelter, but we all found good spots and returned to the shelter to sit by the fire, cook, and chat with people.  Nutella, St. Croix, Walmart, Flatfoot, Fancy Feet, Mouse, and everyone else we had been leap-frogging with over the past two weeks seemed to be at this shelter.  It looks like we’re going to have a good group to go through the Hundred Mile Wilderness with.  If anyone had told me two months ago that the trail would be this packed approaching early October (or that the weather would be this nice) I don’t think I would have believed them.

Just fording another pond.
