4/21 Grassy Gap (14.1)

We elected to martyr our knees today on a 3000 foot descent into the Nantahala Outdoor Center, a beautiful compound centered around a raging river that offered real food, good beer, and a completely overwhelming tourist community that we were somewhat unable to process. Of course, we got burgers and beer and pretended we were not unwashed itinerant messes by leaving our packs outside. Despite our efforts to look presentable, the waitress knew immediately which table to seat us at just by smelling us.

After a couple beers, we came up with a brilliant plan to avoid paying for camping by hiking 2 1/2 miles and 1000 feet up the trail on the other side and camping at grassy gap. Of course, we brought more beer. This proved to be fortunate after we sweat out our town beers on the hike up, with Sprouts leading the way, Doc Spice heroically carrying a 12 pack on his head, and Shanks, Genie, Mark and I hobbling behind. We had just enough time before dark to make a campfire and set up our tents.
