4/22 Cable Gap Shelter (19.5)

Today was a painful marathon of masochism. We woke up early and climbed straight up another 2000 feet, then continued along a ‘ridge’ trail that North Carolina apparently constructed specifically to test people’s willpower to continue the trail. The grade was straight up and down and the trail never failed to surprise us with roots, rocks, boulders, mud pits, fallen trees, or occasionally the complete absence of a recognizable trail. Sometimes the trail was just replaced by a gaping hole covered with a pile of branches, presumably to trap hikers i.e. potential food sources.
By the end of the day we were lame, exhausted, and without a will to go on. We crawled into the camp, stripped off our sweaty, beer marinated clothes, and collapsed after dinner.  We will probably not be doing another 19 mile day in North Carolina.
