4/24 Mollies Ridge Shelter (11)

April 24, 2013 at 12:53 pm

We had planned on going further into the ominous Smoky Mountains today but got caught by the rain. We hiked under grey skies all day and about 2 miles from the first shelter, Mark’s knee, which had been bothering him all day, gave out. As we sat wrapping it the first peals of thunder grumbled in the distance, and we began moving again much more slowly. Soggy and despondent that we would be missing our companions, we pulled into the first shelter and found several of our trail friends waiting out the rain. Soon after, Zach Galifanakis, who got his trail name for looking, sounding, and acting exactly like (and might actually be) Zach Galifanakis, came in and entertained all of us while we dried our things at the fire place and ate hot food. Tomorrow, we will try to catch Sprouts and Shanks and Blackfoot, the sweet 17 year old boy who got his GED so he could hike the AT barefoot. We are in good company tonight!
