5/7 Big Bald Shelter (10.1)

We got a slow start today, sleeping later than usual and taking our time with breakfast. Flicka entertained us all by balancing on a log while we ate.

She’s also a great dishwasher

We tried to catch a ride from the gap to get aqua Mira but failed, so we headed North some more. The short but steep climb ahead really tired us out, surprisingly, and we stopped in the beautiful idyllic meadow at the top for an early lunch in the sun. We have been constantly hungry for days now and are finally realizing that we just need to plan on eating more. Lately I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night hungry, lending me a reputation as a shelter mouse and causing Mark to stare reproachfully at me when I wake him up eating the granola bars I’ve secretly stashed in my sleeping bag. I feel like my body is eating itself, and feel wildly frustrated when the grocery stores we visit have whole aisles full of low fat diet foods and that mock us by imitating their high calorie cousins. Every week there are starving hikers who accidentally buy low carb tortillas.

After a long, food filled break, we started up again with a lot more energy but found soon that we were hiking into a storm. As we climbed Big Bald, a huge black cloud moved straight through the top and we were able to watch it swallow the valley below us. Visibility dropped, thunder began to roll in, and we ran down the mountain as the first drops fell around us. We made it to the shelter and for a moment debated continuing on. Then an icy fog enveloped us and the sky opened up and we decided we could wake up early and put in a long day to Erwin tomorrow. The night was pretty cold again but we stayed dry and warm enough. We are so ready for summer to begin.
