5/26 Atkins, VA

Today was a day we really couldn’t have predicted.  We spent a lot of our morning talking with The Big Galoot and Scaredy Cat, who are great people that love hiking.  B.G. was a multiple thru hiker years ago on the AT, and also has the PCT and the CDT under his belt.  He is also a bear whisperer, and his bear magnet abilities made us a little wary about camping near him.

We were expecting to do maybe a 15 mile day, but midway through the day Mark got a call and learned about a friend’s recent passing.  We decided to hike out to pay our respects and within minutes of the phone call, B.G. and Scaredy Cat passed us and offered us a ride and a bed.  They were finishing up an 11 day section hike that ended in Atkins, at our next road crossing, and everything couldn’t have worked out better.  They loaded us in their car and we bid adieu to the rest of the crew we were hiking with.  Survivor said he might watch some goats on a farm while we were gone so we would be able to catch up to him.  We are both touched and amused, and hoping to catch up to him and the other great people we’ve met.

An old schoolhouse on the trail.

B.G. and Scaredy Cat put us up in some great accommodations for the night and made us an amazing breakfast.  Then they drove us to Charlottesville and even waved as we took off on the train.  It felt very fitting, although we felt pretty out of place with our smelly hiker bags on the business section of Amtrak.  The man with the bow tie and tweed jacket across from us pretended not to smell our hiker funk while he read his paper, but we know it was an act.

Just some more beautiful stuff. We can’t wait to get back to it!
