We are sitting in rocking chairs on the porch of a gorgeous restored cabin, looking out at raised garden beds, a large huddle of ducks, and pouring rain. The nice thing about the rain is that every day is a good day for a zero. We’re also hoping to be the first people officially recognized by the ATC for swimming the trail.

Right now, though, we have nothing to complain about. It’s fairly warm out, we have good food and good friends here, and there is a flock of very gregarious chickens keeping us entertained. One actually laid an egg on Mark’s phone earlier this morning while it cackled at us.

A brazen fowl.

There is a circus playing out in front of us as I type this. The roosters are bullying the hens, both dogs are playing fetch with the colorful parade of hikers on the lawn, the Guinea Fowl are making a racket, and the ducks keep waddling around in a gaggle in an effort to avoid everything but they keep losing one of them in the effort. We spent the day relaxing, eating, and playing cribbage (at least until one of the roosters jumped on our board and kicked our cards around.) Tiny prehistoric terrorists aside, though, we can honestly say it was one of our best days off so far.
