7/6 Blackburn ATC Center (18)

Kyra hiked with us today!  For those of you who haven’t made her impressive acquaintance, she was my trail crew leader in Americorps.  She is skilled with chainsaw, crosscut, and serious face making.

She also brought us beer.

To celebrate crossing our one thousand mile mark, we woke up with the sun today and hiked most of the dreaded ‘Roller Coaster’.

Fortunately, we were in the statistic that survives, and we made it through the worst of it before the heat of day hit.  Then we got rewarded with this view:

We also finally saw the sign we’ve been waiting to see for six hundred miles…

… from the other side.
We made it through Virginia!!

After meeting up with Kyra by Bears Den, we hiked the last seven miles to the Blackburn Appalachian Trail Conservancy Center with her.  We drank beers at the 1000 mile mark and yelled excitedly, which was a source of amusement, confusion, and probably reproach for the day hikers passing us.

More views, blah blah blah.

We were treated like royalty after we parted ways with Kyra at Blackburn, and we were glad to be there on a low volume night and get the chance to talk to the caretakers Chris and Caroline, former thruhikers themselves.  They served us up some good food and we stayed up talking on the wide inviting porch until the day caught up with us.

Thanks for joining us for 1000 Kyra!
