Today we woke up with one objective: gluttony.

We are obliged as thru hikers to eat a half gallon of icecream at the halfway point, or at least to attempt it.  To answer the obvious questions: it was completely disgusting, Hersheys was the brand (Thanks, PA), Mark finished his in 20 minutes, I ate 3/4 of it and quit before I threw up, and we did not feel good after.  But, tradition is tradition.

As we forced our way through, others joined us…

And still more…

This photo of Appalachian Trails Binge Eating Anonymous taken by Frodo, who waited for the better deal and ate his half gallon of icecream several miles down the trail.

All this for one marker:

After our icecream coma we spent some time looking around the AT museum at Pine Grove Furnace.

My favorite part: Grandma Gatewood’s satchel that she carried over one shoulder while hiking the AT multiple times.  14,000 miles were put on various pairs of high top sneakers, wool socks, a gingham dress, and a twenty pound burlap sack of materials while she foraged and wandered her way around the country.

After being fortified by the legends of Earl Schaffer, Benton Mackaye, and Grandma Gatewood, we headed out on the second half of our trip.
