7/16 Duncannon (26.5)

We walked our first marathon with packs today.  And we did it in 95 degree heat.  Many litres of water were sacrificed to the cause.  But, we were on a mission: to get a beer at the Doyle, a famously dilapidated (or historic) hotel in Duncannon that caters almost exclusively to hikers.  We started at 8:30 and found our motivation waning after our first few miles of exposed corn and bean fields.

The three of us stopped for a little while at the Scott Trail work Center and had a rendezvous with Tumbleweed, Cinderella, Timon, Beeline, Schnitzel, and Limey, who wandered towards us from the wrong direction after missing the white blazes that went under the bridge.  We were excited to realize how many people were at the same point we were, and moved onward in good spirits.

We really had to push ourselves to leave the next shelter, as well, but finally we found the courage and busted out the last eleven and a half miles in four hours.  We were at the bar drinking cold beers at 9:15, eating a whole pizza by 10, and asleep after our second beer by 10:30. Our hiking has really been getting in the way of our drinking.  But, we survived the heat and we now have so much respect for anyone who can actually run the distance that we walked.

Beautiful beautiful Duncannon from the ridge.

Made it!
