7/17 Beating the Heat (4)

Well, we’ve been drinking all day in air conditioning.  And we’re not ashamed at all.  Maybe hiker culture normalizing this behavior has helped to dull the self-reproach, but this bar is packed with people in goretex and wicking shirts and it is over a hundred degrees outside.

We dragged ourselves away from the Doyle after 23.5 miles (not technically a zero) and across the bridge out of town, which we’ve been referring fondly to as spider city.  We started our walk up the ridge as dark fell, allowing us to collect enough spider webs with our faces to make a dress out of.  We camped at the top of the ridge before the first shelter amid soft grounds and many more spider friends.  We woke up with spiderwebs in Mark’s shoes, but we were still grateful for the little bug eaters (spoiler – this is foreshadowing).  We sort of defeated the point of our long day by bookending it with nearoes, but we’re just glad we escaped the Doyle blackhole.
