7/26 Delaware Water Gap!! (15.6)

Our last hurrah in PA is here!!  Tonight we’re stopping just short of the New Jersey border in Delaware Water Gap, the Northern terminus of the AT in Pennsylvania.  The rocks are clearly going to miss us, because they almost didn’t let us go today.  We made a pact that if one of us broke an ankle in the last part of the state, the rest of the group would drag the injured one over the border.  With that determination, we left PA in a long line of lazy, lazy hikers:

Six miles from the border?  Why not stop for an extended break…

Some more decent views today, but the best ones were at the end, when we were looking over the river at New Jersey:

Walking into Delaware Water Gap felt surreal, even more so after we were invited by Enoch, the tallest man living, to join him and some section hikers at a restaurant that was clearly too nice for hikers.

With live jazz playing in the background and a bottle of chilled Chardonnay on the table, we were clearly out of place bearing our stinking clothes, mud swathed calves, and greasy hair, but the three ladies that invited us bought all of us dinner and drinks!  What an appropriate ending to Pennsylvania.  Even Flicka lucked out:

That actually is seafood and Asparagus that the chef prepared for her free of charge…

The most spoiled dog in PA.

After the amazing and unexpected trail magic, we retired to the Church on the Hill, which is a great free hostel all set up for hikers.

Pennsylvania: So hard to hike your terrain, so easy to love your towns.
