7/27 Mohican Outdoor Center (11)

Oh how lazy we are now! We’ve been spoiled by Pennsylvania towns and we spent the first half of the day walking around Delaware Water Gap and eating. We got showers at the Church Hostel, breakfast at the diner, and ice cream at an old fashioned ice cream parlor.

That is a real Soda Jerk.

Then we toughed up a little and hiked out through construction, which was strange.

The way across the bridge was a little harrowing with traffic zipping by, but mentally gratifying to finally be crossing the border.

The river separating PA and NJ, at last!

Then we entered New Jersey… There were hordes of people sitting between the highway and the river with coolers and music playing. We had a difficult time hiking our first few miles because the trail was so full of day hikers in flip flops. It was a weird experience after our days in PA completely devoid of hiker interaction aside from other thru hikers. We were suddenly thrust back into day hiker territory with hundreds of people, and they all smelled better than us. Still, the way was beautiful:

We were a little overloaded on natural beauty by the end of the day, but so excited to get back to hiking! Our one big sadness is that LadyMac is going back to Maine for a family reunion, so we’ll be separated by a few days on the trail again! Flicka is going home for good for now, so hopefully when she gets back on she’ll make quick time without a crazy husky pulling her all over the woods, and catch us without much delay.

Flicka, you will be missed big time.

The day ended at the Mohican Outdoor Center with a really fascinating talk on Astronomy by a member of the AMC and International Dark Sky Association. It’s nice to take a break from hiking and actually learn more about what we’re doing on occasion. We bid LadyMac goodbye and fell asleep in a trail angel campsite

New trails on the horizon now.
